BPA/SWIP Committee

The BPA is committed to addressing the underrepresentation of women in philosophy in the UK, where women make up nearly 50% of all philosophy undergraduates but less than 25% of permanent philosophy staff. Go to our Diversity page for further information, including details on our Good Practice Scheme which is full of recommendations to help improve the culture for women in philosophy.

BPA/SWIP-UK Committee for Women in Philosophy

This Committee was established in 2010 for the purposes of compiling a report on the underrepresentation of women in UK philosophy, which was published in 2011; a follow-up report was published in 2021. In 2014 the committee launched the BPA/SWIP Good Practice Scheme.

The Committee consists of some members of the BPA and SWIP-UK Executive Committees, together with a handful of invited external members.
